EXPERIMENTAL HIP-HOP TRIFECTA: Clipping / Death Grips / frateleNORD

As you might be aware by now, TZEEEAC has become a filthy hipster-ridden hole on the internet, where the mainstream is pretty much shunned in favor of the underground, the obscure, the hidden and (at times) the occult. We have specific, yet all-encompassing tastes - as long as they fall within the limits of the weird and the heavy. Electronic music? Sure, but it has to be about futuristic robots beheading each other with laser gauntlets in a neon-lit post-apocalyptic urban nightmare. Classic rock? Maybe, but is it sung by a Japanese band whose members can barely speak any English yet insist on writing lyrics in the same language? Industrial? All for it, as long as it's produced using actual industrial machinery (looks like I forgot to write about Author&Punisher and GOG). Pop music? Sounds great, but it has to be weird and noisy, with lyrics that read like Juno's personal diary.

Hip hop ain't much different - actually, no, it has to be for me to even touch it. There's nothing especially interesting to me about regular gangsta rap or shitty MTV glossy rap. I don't even like Kanye West. No, my favorite hip-hop acts are weird, cutting edge artists that have dedicated their lives to reinventing an entire genre, smashing its tropes and making it fascinating again. Below are 3 of 2014's hip-hop albums which are mandatory listens. Incidentally, these artists are also able to bring Marco and I together for awkward white guy hip-hop dancing, much to the collective embarrassment of anyone around us. TURN DAT SHIT UP.

Clipping have merged two genres which I never imagined would come together: hip-hop and noise. Good news is, they're both expertly done. Under the appearance of a smooth, technically flawless delivery, this dude is spitting out lyrics about chopping hands off, sitting on the porch of your ghetto place shooting motherfuckers for looking at your daughter the wrong way and dancing around in a night club until you're thrown out on the curb. The rapping is then laid out on a nail bed of harsh, abrasive noise, sounds of shattering glass, crashing cars, crumbling bricks and drilling machines. No, I mean it, these dudes have manages to construct hip-hop beats out of random noises and it's the most badass thing ever. They even have one song where the MC raps over a digital alarm clock. You know the noise that has plagued your childhood mornings and possibly even your shitty adulthood? These guys have taken it, subdued it and made it their bitch. They have curb-stomped hip-hop, cut it up and now they're wearing its bloody skin and parading around the hood. Either hide forever or come out in submission, because hip-hop can never be the same again. IT'S CLIPPING BITCH.

Death Grips are the de facto terrorists of the hip-hop scene, blowing up its conventions and mutating it into something gruesome and fascinating to hear. They're big favorites of the TZEEEAC crew since they started out and we were surprised, just like everyone else, when Death Grips dropped another unannounced album earlier this year. I wasn't surprised, though, to find out it's even more fucked up and pushes even more boundaries than their previous efforts. Niggas on the moon is their most schizophrenic album to date. MC Ride's lyrics are as abstract as I've come to expect and he sounds like he's legit mentally ill (in a good way?), and the beats he lays his vocal tracks over are crude concoctions of little bits of noise, static, primitive drum licks and chopped up glitch samples of Bjork's vocals. Yes, that Bjork. She said she's excited that Death Grips decided to use her voice throughout this album and so should you. This is Death Grips at their most creative and they have made sure they will be remembered as such - they have decided to call it quits while they're in their prime. After a short musical career full of publicity stunts, deliberately missing concerts and just generally fucking with their fans every which way, Death Grips disbanding with no warning and literally announcing it via a note on a dirty napkin is so part of their modus operandi that I'm not even upset or disappointed. I was in on it the whole time. I do what my people would.

Finally, here’s one from our own Romanian cesspool, the enigmatic bros known as frateleNORD. They started off as a pretty tame experimental hip-hop duo, albeit with a very recognizable, stream-of-consciousness type lyrical approach. These days, I don’t know what the fuck they’re doing. Their latest album is 33 tracks of hermetic, backstreet philosopher, drug-induced gangsta rap that will throw you off the loop. Simple but effective beats lay the groundwork for Cleg’s abstract, often surreal lyrics that will be forever lost on me. I have no idea what he’s talking about and I’m fine with that. The music is so damn enjoyable, perfectly fit for walking around the city at night, while taxis whiz by you, that I really don’t care that I might not “get it”. For all I know, there is nothing more beneath the surface, so why try digging up meanings that might not even be there? !

POST #666: Lord Mantis - Death Mask (2014)

EY KIDS WASSUP?

I’m briefly back from the corporate trenches (it’s brutal out there) and, seeing as it’s been more than a month since I’ve written something on here, I figured I’d do well and contribute to the festering pit that TZEEEAC has become. I’m having a really hard time mustering enough energy and motivation to write here on a regular basis, but one post every once in a while is doable, especially as I’ve amassed a pretty hefty backlog of stuff I wanna share and talk about.

Also, this momentary return to form happens to be the 666th post on TZEEEAC, so I thought “hey, what better way to celebrate this milestone than with some fucking horrible death metal album that will creep everyone and their dog out?”

Thus I give you Lord Mantis. A relatively new death metal outfit bred in the sewers of Chicago that have gained quite a bit of accolades for their efforts, especially 2012’s Pervertor. This year, they have returned with their third album, Death Mask, and a lot of people seemed to have lost their shit about the cover art, mainly because there’s a dong on it. The artist responsible for this nasty painting is none other than Wrest aka Jef Whitehead aka that dude from Leviathan and more importantly Lurker of Chalice. It’s pretty cool, I guess, but it doesn’t hold a candle to the cover art on Pervertor, penned by the mighty Justin Bartlett aka VBERKVLT and which featured deformed creatures feasting on the remains of some sort of crucified Jesus-like abomination. Not sure why I just typed this entire thing, but you should definitely check out Justin Bartlett’s stellar work. Do so while also listening to Lurker of Chalice and now we’re in business.

As for the music itself, Death Mask is a really weird beast and the best I can describe it is a filthy, gooey mixture of death metal, oozing sludge and earth-shaking drone with a hefty dose of doom metal and some odd bits of noise and industrial-type stuff thrown in. Most of the time, the riffs are fuzzy, very repetitive, pummeling as fuck and drowned in reverb. The drumming feels like being run over by stampeding mammoths and the vocals are some of the most infected, distorted and vile snarls I have heard on an album this year. The songs are long enough to allow these combined elements to reach their full potential and effects and a complete listen of Death Mask will leave you feeling weakened and disgusted. Album closer Three Crosses brings in some – dare I say? – beautiful guitar leads, but the most fun I’ve had with this opus lies in the first three tracks, which caused me much dismay and also made me wonder if maybe Lord Mantis are pioneering a new genre of music situated at the crossroads between drone, noise and death metal. Body Choke is especially brutal – it feels like being choked and stomped on for nearly 9 minutes with no respite. Love every minute of it.

Not sure yet if this album will make my end-of-the-year list (although I’m convinced many online publications will have a rightful spot for it on their lists), but you should definitely check it out because it is one of the more unique-sounding death metal albums I’ve encountered recently and it’s oppressive enough to remind you of the first time you listened to Wormphlegm.

Whitehorse - Raised Into Darknes (2014)

You already know Australia produces some of the most horrific (in the good sense of the word, obviously) metal bands to ever disgrace our world, so I won't go on about that. I'm gonna get straight to the point and tell you about Whitehorse, an unholy collective from Melbourne who play a sickening mixture of doom, sludge and noise.

With more than 10 releases under their belts, Whitehorse are no rookies. Their music is crushing and meant to cause pain. The three songs on Raised Into Darkness crawl along at a funeral pace, propelled by slow, distorted riffs, deliberate use of noise and feedback and vocals that come in two flavors: growling and even more growling. Imagine the little girl from The Ring being stabbed in the throat and the Balrog from Lord of the Rings and you're coming close to what the vocals on this beast sound like. So, as you may gather, this is in no way easy listening. It's tedious, punishing, pitch black and it'll probably cause you to break out in boils. Which is why I suggest you go see them on the second half of their European tour. They're even playing with our buddies in Void Forger tomorrow. Hoo doggy!

The Haxan Cloak - Excavation (2013)

I've been sitting here for a while thinking what to write about this album, but who am I kidding? We're no Pitchfork, as much as we like to joke about it. I don't feel up to the task of writing five or six paragraphs about The Haxan Cloak, because words don't do justice to it. It as a minimalistic ambient/experimental album about the afterlife, employing sub-bass frequencies, quiet and unsettling percussion, various creepy noises and discrete strings that bring forth an uneasy feeling. Excavation is a highly atmospheric album and you should only listen to it at night with the lights off, in bed, curled up under a blanket. It will make for the most terrifying sleep you've ever had.

Seriously, this is insanely good. And you can listen to it live tomorrow, in Bucharest. Jelly I can't make it, but at least I'll get to see TZEEEAC writer and sweet bro Daniel Witchfinder play heavy metal in front of an unsuspecting crowd. Should be good.

Street Sects - The Morning After the Night We Raped Death (2014)

Are you having a nice day? Is the sun shining down on your face? Are kittens and rainbows dashing out of your ass and you feel like the whole world is a beautiful place and everyone is part of one global family? ARE YOU FEELING OKAY ABOUT THINGS?

Then meet Street Sects, who will crush your feelings and stomp on your shitty happy smile. A duo hailing from Austin, Texas, these dudes don't mess around when it comes to unbearable noise. The Morning After the Night We Raped Death is the first of their planned five releases and it brings forth three insanely noisy tracks that will hammer you to the floor with machine gun drumming, distorted screams and more hissing than a cement truck full of rattle snakes, cats and broken TVs. It sounds kinda like Gigantic Brain's pummeling cybergrind songs. This is NOT easy listening and you WILL ask yourself "What the fuck am I listening to?".

If you want to rape Death, you'd better come prepared.

Thanks for sending me the EP, guys. It ruined my life.

Mutation - Error 500 (2013)

Being heralded "the next step in the evolution of extreme music", this album could have been the best record of the past year - in theory. Napalm Death's Shane Embury in the studio with Ginger Wildheart of The Wildhearts and Jon Poole of The Cardicas, some highly illustrious guest musicians... well, that could have been pure sonic terrorism. However, the only uprest and agitation this causes is the ruckus a 12 year old boy with a fake beard screaming "Jihad!" would stir on the playground, which is - let's be honest - not very much.

Yes, it's well done. These guys know what they are doing. But at the end of the day, good intentions don't make good records. The supposed musical extremity here is nervous math rock riff after weirdo break (hey, it's on Mike Patton's Ipecac Recordings, what did you expect?!), with some effects here and there. This is not brutal, it's just annoying. I hated mathematics in school, so why the fuck would I listen to math rock? It makes no sense, just like these songs don't.

Given, there are a few good moments on Error 500. Merzbow brings the noise on a track, but it sounds so tame that his chickens could have done it - in a karada. Mark E Smith slurs some toothless gibberish about bleeding shoelaces. Embury is still funny to look at (am I the only one who thinks he looks and plays like a balding Buzz Osborne?). But... but... that's just not enough. I am sure that the boners of Bitch Pitchfork hipsters will be pressing hard against their skinny jeans, but sorry: the emperor just does not wear any clothes.

Nice try, next.

Pissed Jeans - Honeys (2013)

Pissed Jeans are a noise rock/punk band from Allentown, Pennsylvania and, despite their name, which led me to expect a hyperviolent hardcore band, their new album Honeys is more like the musical equivalent of a quirky indie comedy about awkward teenagers who just kinda sit around complaining about stuff. Except Pissed Jeans are a bunch of no-longer-young dudes who are pretty depressed and annoyed by a lot of little things.

After listening to the new Touche Amore and Modern Life Is War albums - both dealing with profound themes like one's own personal legacy, estranged friends, facing the death of a relative and so forth - the songs on Honeys come off as surprisingly mundane: one by one, singer Matt Korvette tackles issues like being a lazy boyfriend (but who should nonetheless be appreciated more by the poor girl by his side), wearing a suit and feeling weird, setting up a perfect social media profile even though you're nothing like you describe yourself (and the not-so-surprising discovery that other people do it too), becoming a dull corporate office drone who can't even muster enough enthusiasm to gloat at the death of his project manager, avoiding doctors because you're afraid of needles and being a good-for-nothing man-child who wastes his life sitting on the couch and watching cartoons.

These are petty concerns compared to other real tragedies one can experience during his or her lifetime, yet Pissed Jeans take these minor nuisances very seriously, just like George Costanza would. The little everyday struggles are set against a backdrop of spastic drumming, fuzzy guitar riffs with occasional nods to stoner rock and some filthy bass lines that just add to the general feeling of frustration. Meanwhile, Korvette screams, kicks and shouts his lyrics with the energy of a guy who just pulled out a shotgun in a McDonald's, pissed off because he missed the breakfast menu by like five minutes. He's angry, annoyed, passionate and, above all else, armed and dangerous.

There's no shame in first world problems, and Pissed Jeans are here to tell us it's okay to be frustrated about your friend's cats who give you allergies or about your shitty boss, even though you're too lacking in options to really afford to tell him to fuck off. Instead, you suck today's dick and keep your mouth shut. Then you go home, put Honeys on full blast and proceed to smash all of your plates with a baseball bat. All in a day's work.

American - Demo 2013

Some days, you just feel like a piece of shit.

Some days, nothing seems to work out for you.

Some days, everything seems pointless.

Some days, you've been sitting around all day, barely doing anything productive at all.

Some days, you think of calling it quits.

Some days, you'd go get some beers, but you just don't want to leave your house.

Some days, you wallow in your own filth.

Some days, you feel disgusted with yourself.

And on rare occasions, a piece of music just happens to drop by, perfectly capturing your shit mood.

This is one of those occasions.

American.

Virginia.

Hardcore / Sludge / Black Metal / Noise.

Buzzing guitars.

Horrible shrieks.

Dread.

It's the perfect sonic companion for tonight.

Thank you, dudes.

clipping. - midcity (2013)

Clipping are some dudes who make hip-hop and fuck bitches. Oh, sorry, wrong review. Let me rephrase: they’re a bunch of dudes who make noise and fuck bitches.

But noise is kind of a weak word to describe their music… Their beats are a… thing . Like, they’re bigger than life, humanity and the Universe itself. They’re something on which Cthulhu would spit His Eternal rhymes if he decided to form a hip-hop band. Static noises, high pitched screeches, hypnotizing loops and all the good stuff.  It’s like these guys recorded their album in the middle of a freaking industrial complex. Imagine that: sweaty, low income white trash who’ve just kicked their crack addiction building tanks, artillery pieces and shit while Diggs just sits in a corner and raps about how the club smells like ass and pussy. And I’m pretty sure they even put some high-frequency sounds here and there because my dog goes crazy every time I play this album. The Beatles used to do that too, so I’m okay with it, since they’re my favorite band and all.

What blows my mind even more is how Diggs finds rhythm even in the most abrasive and minimalistic beats. This dude spits like Charizard after drinking out of a volcano  - his rhymes are aggressive and cut like The Bride’s katana in Kill Bill (making out of context pop culture references?  that’d be my medical condition). The Intro is a blunt, straightforward fuck your face track, Loud is, well, you know, loud, Five is the fifth track of the album and get.it is my official earworm of the year song.

But you know what really great about Midcity?  Despite its abrasive sound, it’s catchy and quite easy to listen to. It makes you feel uncomfortable and overwhelmed, sure, but so do tacos, and guess who's still eating the shit out of them.

Azi învăţ

Şi asta înseamnă c-o să ascult o grămadă de albume ambient/drone/synth/noise whatever, so why not share?

Wooden - Birch Boulevard (2011)

Nu-i rău, iar ziua abia a început.

Streaming şi download: http://woodensounds.bandcamp.com/

Saåad - It Was LP (2010)

Emeralds - Does It Look Like I'm Here? (2010)

Dalt Wisney - Lifetime Psychedelic Dance Lessons (2007)

"Dingbat the Singing Cat" este aur. Păcat că e foarte scurt.

Orange Crush - Autumn Reflections (2009)

Label-ul Archaic Horizon zice:

Orange Crush is the moniker of musician Karl Endreson from Norway and under which he brings us his latest album "Autumn Reflections". For fans of his previous works, this album won't disappoint; the same beautiful nostalgic melodies, wavering synths, and slow lo-fi beats are present and even further developed.

Revolving songs around various themes of nature, Orange Crush captures and freezes ephemeral moments, places where a listeners mind can wander through his hazy reverb drenched sonics. All of it is perfectly polished and mixed with samples and field recordings that give this album a brilliant atmosphere.

Orange Crush @ Archaic Horizon  (download)

deadmau5 - 4x4=12 (2010)

Not bad at all, actually.

KATANAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
